A few questions everyone should ask a moving company before hiring them

La Rosa Del Monte agents meet and exceed the highest standards required of moving and storage companies across the world. But there are plenty of moving companies out there, advertising online, who are not much more than a couple of guys with a rented truck and no experience.

To help you choose, here are five basic questions you should ask potential moving companies in order to confirm the legitimacy of the companies. These few simple questions can help prevent you from going through a “moving nightmare” with an untrustworthy moving company who uses poor business practices.

Will you give us an in-home estimate with a qualified moving professional?

The answer should definitely be “yes.” If a moving company gives you an estimate either over the phone or online but does not follow up in person, it’s a reason to be suspicious. If a mover does not want to assess your move in person they may just be trying to get your business with a low estimate, but there is no guarantee that the price won’t go up on moving day when they get to see your home and items you are moving.

Does your moving company have an office and/or warehouse facility?

Properly running a moving and storage company requires a significant amount of equipment, organization and staff. Without a real facility, you may be dealing with a 'here today, gone tomorrow' moving company.

Do you own your own vehicles?

LRDM agents take pride in maintaining their fleet of trucks and vans that are safe, clean and reliable. If a moving company does not own their own vehicles the chances that they are properly maintaining and managing the vehicles is highly doubtful.

Do you have insurance?

This is a no brainer. No insurance? Find a legit moving company.

How many of your employees are “on the books,” either full- or part-time, and how many are day workers?

LRDM movers are professionals who are invested in doing the best job possible because the success of the company relies on them. Some discount moving companies hire day laborers who are not on the books, get paid cash at the end of each day, and have no incentive to take good care of your home or belongings.

National Hispanic Heritage Month 9/15 - 10/15

La Rosa Del Monte would like to inform you that the 15th of September marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, 30 days celebrating the Latino culture and heritage shared by over 50 million Americans.

Even before President Lyndon Johnson chose the 15th as the start of Hispanic Heritage Week in the 1960s, it was already an important holiday on the Latino calendar as the independence day of five Latin American countries:
• Costa Rica
• El Salvador
• Guatemala
• Nicaragua
• Honduras

The following day, September 16th, is Mexican Independence Day.

What is important is that each of us take a moment to reflect and appreciate this culture which has been derived from South America, Spain, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. The hispanic culture is steeped in tradition of hard work, determination, and leadership. Hispanics such as U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, singer and activist Joan Baez, actor Desi Arnaz, Rita Moreno, Ceasar Chavez, and singer Celia Cruz are just a few groundbreakers of Hispanic origin who have shaped our culture and defined the way we live. Their contribution to our society has made a great impact in our world.

Moving Companies vs. Brokers vs. Van Lines

What you don’t know can potentially hurt you… Consumers need to be aware that moving companies, moving van lines and moving brokers are three entirely different entities. Learn more about the services you can expect from each so you can make an informed decision when contracting your moving services.

*Moving Companies – Most Likely, the Safest Bet! Moving companies complete your move personally, from start to finish. They customarily are incorporated clearly as the entity you hire, own their own fleet of trucks, have long-term own employees they’ve trained and are licensed and insured.

Moving Brokers – Quite Probably, Your Worst Choice! Moving Brokers most often provide over the phone or internet generated estimates. Many moving brokers are internet-based companies that do not have their own fleet of trucks or their own personnel they’ve trained and employed for years. BEWARE of Brokers! Moving brokers customarily offer greatly discounted rates that attracted unknowing consumers. Once a moving broker receives your deposit for the moving services, their only obligation to you is to assign a moving company to perform your moving services. Oftentimes, moving brokers work with under-insured, under-qualified moving companies who will agree to perform your services at the low rate guaranteed by the broker. Customers BEWARE, once the movers arrive, the terms of your contract and services usually change. By now, it is too late to hire another mover as most consumers need to move that very day and cannot afford to let the moving company leave the premises. Moving brokers are continuously being investigated and you’ll find numerous clips on CNN news feeds, warming consumers to BEWARE of moving brokers.

Van Lines – Not Exactly Who You Might Think You Are Hiring! You’ve seen Van Lines operating under such names as Allied, United, North American, Wheaton and Mayflower. You’d think these are all huge moving companies, right? Think again. Most often, these are smaller moving companies using these recognizable trade mark names and paying the van line a percentage of their profits. You’ll often find the van line name appearing in impressively huge letters at the top of the ad (i.e., UNITED VAN LINES). Although, if you look throughout the ad, somewhere, in considerably smaller print, you’ll notice the name of the actual moving company you would be contracting for service. Van lines use subcontractors who are paid by the moving company to limit their liabilities. The subcontractor can use anyone he wishes as an employee who, keep in mind, will be the person who will actually be moving your most precious possessions, walking in and out of your new residence and interacting with your family. These are often not actual employees but rather, day laborers which means you may, or may not, be the recipient of substandard moving services. These van lines forward all their nationwide complaints to the BBB where they have established their corporate headquarters. Therefore, if you wish to research the reputation of a particular van line, first establish where that van lines makes its corporate headquarters and begin your research for complaints, lawsuits or infractions in that city and state.

National Flag Day

June 14 is Flag Day. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag. In 1916, President Wilson signed a proclamation creating national Flag Day.

A Flag Day/Army Birthday celebration is taking place on the 1211 Plaza during Fox & Friends on Tuesday morning, June 14.

The United War Council & several arms of military members join us to celebrate as well as announce that Fox will be exclusively hosting the Veterans Day Parade on November 11. There will also be a flag raising at the plaza at 6 p.m.

The 2011 “54th National Puerto Rican Day Parade” Background

The National Puerto Rican Day Parade was established in 1995 to create national awareness and appreciation of Puerto Rican culture and its contribution to the culture and society of the United States. Each year in the second Sunday in June, more than two million spectators line the parade route from 44th to 86th streets starting at 11a.m. With approximately 31 delegations from the States and many more from Puerto Rico participate.

Additional millions watch each year on Television from theirs homes and enjoy the music, floats, celebrities and host that bring them the highlights of a day of “Puerto Rican” culture.

With jobs getting harder to find in current neighborhoods, more and more people are warming up to the idea of moving to other cities or even other states where it isn’t so hard to find a job. Unlike local moves, long distance moves are much more complicated and when searching for a long distance moving company you will have to do twice the work and research than you would when employing the services of a local mover.

One of the first things you would want to do is to secure a list of long distance movers searching for those that offer a reasonable enough price and those that have longevity and reliability in the business.

When you narrow it down to the long distance movers that most impress you then you can start to compile your questions for them as well as be prepared to provide them with relevant information that would determine the cost of your move. Ideally, the movers would first need to know where you are moving so that they can calculate the distance and miles. You can also give them a guesstimate about how many items you have in your home so that they can also determine the size of truck to send on moving day; one that would fit all of your household items in one trip. Usually long distance moves mean the higher risk for your items either being damaged or getting lost. With that in mind it would be in your best interest to find out if your long distance moving company provides moving insurance.

If you need packing assistance you should also let your moving company know of this and if you also need packing materials, your moving company could also assist you with that as well. When you meet with the moving company look around to see if they have certifications on the wall; this is a good indication that you are working with professionals. You can also ask for references from past customers so you can contact them and find out more information about the moving company as well. There are some long distance companies that would not include your vehicle with the move or may ask you to drive to your new destination. It is imperative that you know what would happen to your vehicle; if the moving company cannot move it they can certainly refer you to a company that can get the job done.

Cargo Insurance Requirement for Household Good Carriers and Freight Forwarders

As of March 21, 2011, only household goods (HHG) carriers and HHG Freight Forwarders need to have evidence of cargo insurance on file with FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration).

While FMCSA has not required such a filing, numerous non-HHG carriers have filed cancellations of their cargo insurance with FMCSA effective March 21, 2011.

The carriers’ cancellation notices triggered system-generated letters to these carriers indicating that FMCSA would revoke their authority within 30 days of the service date of the letter.

FMCSA clarifies that non-HHG carriers and non-HHG freight forwarders who have received Notices of Investigation for Revocation of Authority based on the termination of cargo insurance on or after March 21, 2011 need not respond to such letters if they have a service date of February 19, 2011 or after.

FMCSA will not revoke the operating authority of non-HHG carriers and non-HHG freight forwarders whose cargo insurance expires on or after March 21, 2011.

The agency is taking corrective measures to alert carriers

BBB and AMSA Offer Advice on Avoiding Moving Scams this Summer

Following a few simple rules when selecting a mover will go a long way toward protecting yourself from being victimized by scams this summer, according to Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA). Chief among them: make sure you know who you’re hiring and know your rights.

"Because anyone with a truck and a website can claim to be a mover, our industry is plagued by con artists who don’t adhere to standards for honesty and ethical conduct," said AMSA President and CEO Linda Bauer Darr. "When it comes to such an important decision, you can prevent a lot of headaches by checking on a company in advance to identify which put customer service and integrity first. For interstate moves, that means an AMSA-certified ProMover."

BBB and AMSA offer the following checklist for finding a trustworthy moving company:

Research the company thoroughly. While state regulations vary, all interstate movers must, at minimum, be licensed by the federal government and are assigned a motor carrier number you can verify on FMCSA’s website, www.protectyourmove.gov. Also check the company's rating with your BBB, which maintains more than 17,000 Business Reviews on movers across North America. Having at least a satisfactory BBB rating is one of seven screenings AMSA relies on when authorizing its interstate mover members to display the ProMover logo, the sign of a quality, professional mover which has pledged to abide by the organization's Code of Ethics.

Get at least three written in-home estimates. No legitimate mover will offer to give you a firm price online or over the phone. Also keep in mind that the lowest estimate can sometimes be an unrealistic low-ball offer which can cost you more in the end.

Know your rights. Research your rights as a consumer with either FMCSA for interstate moves or the state in which you reside for moves within that state. Also, enlist the help of BBB or local law enforcement if the moving company fails to live up to its promises or threatens to hold your belongings hostage. FMCSA requires interstate movers to offer arbitration to help settle disputed claims.

Consider getting full value protection. It may cost a few dollars more up front, but it can provide some peace of mind and eliminate a headache after your move. Investing in full (replacement) value protection means any lost or damaged articles will be repaired or replaced, or a cash settlement will be made to repair the item or to replace it at its current market value, regardless of age. It’s important to note that the required minimum coverage of 60 cents per pound would not cover the replacement cost, for example, of a flat panel TV if damaged in transit.
